My name is Janice Hoefer, but some folks know me better as Higginsville's own "Phyllis Diller". My husband of 34 years, Sevier, and I own and operate the Hoefer Funeral Home, Inc. here in Higginsville. My title is pretty much "Girl Friday" and I basically work three days a week or any other time he needs me. He's so fortunate to have such a loyal partner!
I am a lifelong resident of Higginsville, except for one year when my family moved. I graduated from Warrensburg High School in 1971, and then returned to my roots here in Higginsville. Immediately out of high school, I began working as a secretary and the only female at Higginsville Avionics Lab with a bunch of men. What an initiation into my working career! I also worked at Higginsville Printing & Stationery and then at West Central Electric Cooperative, Inc. for almost 25 years.
I am the blessed mother of a daughter, Sarah, a process coordinator with the school district, and a son, Rob, who is deceased. My beautiful grandchildren, Lily and Blake, who I baby-sit two days a week, know me as Meme Hoefer.
Over the years, I have been active in the Higginsville Jaycee Wives, Higginsville Theatre Club, A.B.W.A., and most recently, Lafayette Lions Club, and Higginsville Garden Club. I recently finished a term on the board of the Lafayette County Cancer Coalition. My three-year term on the board of the Higginsville Chamber of Commerce just ended as well. I am a member of Salem United Church of Christ and have sung in the choir the last several years. I taught Sunday school many years and am involved with Women's Fellowship of the church. I also helped raise funds and traveled with our local Youth On Mission to Savannah, Georgia; Bay City, Michigan; and Lead, South Dakota to help repair, paint, etc. for folks who are in need. These projects were a part of Group Work camps. I also love being a part of two prayer groups.
I enjoy reading books, mostly novels, and my favorite author is Karen Kingsbury. I took adult piano lessons for four years and can play great if I don't have to move my hands!
In my spare time, I enjoy entertaining folks with "Higginsville's Own Phyllis Diller". I thoroughly enjoyed acting with the Theatre Co. and am so rewarded when I can make others laugh. I guess I just didn't get enough of playing "dress up" when I was a little girl, because it's so much fun now that I have an excuse when I am "Phyllis".
I am proud to say that I am the oldest female dancer in this event, so if I can do it, anyone can! VOTE FOR ME!
